Annual Church Meeting - Sunday 25th March

On Sunday 25th March there will be a brief morning service will be followed by our "Annual General Meeting".

It's an opportunity to review what God has been doing in and through Cornwell Community Church over the last year - and to consider what He might want us to do differently in the year ahead.

Don't forget - this coming Sunday is shoebox sunday. Bring your boxes filled with gifts ready to send to those to children around the world. And bring your friends and their shoe-boxes as well. The service should last about 45 minutes.

Harvest Service - 2nd October

The Harvest Service take place on Sunday 2nd October at Cornwell.

Along with St Catherine's, we will be donating the gifts from these Services to the Drop in Centre. They are asking for tins of meat, vegetables, soup, custard and sauces, breakfast cereals, spreads, kitchen towels, floor cleaning liquid, shaving foam, sanitizing gel and hand wash! They have told us they have plenty of pasta.

At Cornwell we’re aiming for a family-friendly, fun and informative harvest service followed by a simple bread/cheese/ soup lunch (provided) and bring-and-share puddings (which you're invited to bring so that they can be shared!)

As you hopefully know, our annual Holiday Club starts next week. This year it's called "Mission Rescue".

We'd love to see you all - but especially Leaders and Helpers - at the set up tea, which is at St Catherine's Church Hall from 2pm on Sunday 14th.

Social event Sunday 10th July - Thatcham Nature Discovery Centre

It may appear that we've had our summer already, but we hope it will be back in time for our proposed "social" - a trip to the Nature Discovery Centre at Thatcham on Sunday 10th July. Please see http://www.westberks.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=3791 for info about what's there and for directions.

It's proposed that we meet there at 3pm and do whatever you'd like:

make use of the playgrounds
walk around the lake,
feed the ducks
enjoy a quiet cup of tea in the cafe

Maybe we'll even organise a game or two of something. If you're a good games-organiser or have any ideas you'd like to share please let me know!

Then we can enjoy a "bring-your-own-and-maybe-share" picnic tea at about 4.30-5pm. Whatever happens, weather permitting, it's an opportunity to spend some time together and get to know each other a bit better.

Anyway, we'd be delighted if you'd join us, so if you're a "definite" yes, a "probable" or a "maybe", please let me know. Equally, I'd like to hear from you if you think it's a terrible idea and/or you'd like to suggest alternative social events for another time!

Once we have an idea of numbers we might be able to organise lifts/car sharing, to reduce our carbon footprint, so please indicate, too, if you'd like a lift or would expect to have space in your car.

Holiday club Training evening for all helpers

Forthcoming Special Joint Service - Sunday 26th June

There will be a special joint service on Sunday June 26th at 10:30 am in order to celebrate 25 years of Denis' ordination to the Priesthood. The service will include a Sunday School/Messy Church provision in Hall, Communion and feast.

At 1pm there will be a ‘Bring and Share Meal’ in the Hall. Look out for a chance to sign up to bring a main course, salad or sweet.

Forthcoming Confirmation Service - Evening of Sunday 12th June

The Confirmation Service is being held at St Catherine's at 6.30pm on Sunday 12th June, when candidates from both St Catherine's and Cornwell will be confirmed, in addition to both adults and youngsters from St George's and St Michael's, together with a Baptism and Renewal of Baptism vows.

Bishop Andrew, the new Bishop of Reading will be with us.

We would like to encourage as many people as possible from both St Catherine's and Cornwell, to come and support this event and to give a good welcome to the Bishop, and to those visiting from the other parishes.

FW: Hilary Chick

Just to let you all know that Hilary Chick died yesterday Thursday 31^st March at 4.35am.

Hilary was part of the Cornwell church family and had terminal cancer; she had been in hospital recently but died at home. Evelyn who visited regularly saw her on Tuesday and prayed for her and her family.

We first met Hilary when Evelyn Bartlett and David McMahon called on her as part of the Jesus video project back in 2004. As a result Hilary did the Alpha course twice and found it very helpful. What she learned was a great comfort especially in the last few months of her life.

Hilary was a familiarly figure until recently, walking with Bonnie, her Westie dog on the estate and in Sulham woods.

Please pray for Hilary, her family and friends. She was loved by them and will be missed by all those who knew her.

Cornwell AGM

You’ll read in this month’s magazine that the Cornwell Community Church AGM is on Sunday 20^th March (11am after the usual 10.30am refreshments).

I thought that I’d publicised the date but looking back I see that I haven’t; I’m sorry for this oversight.

If you've been to our previous AGM’s you’ll know that we have a short (20-30 minutes) service, and then some input summarising the year, followed by refreshments with a discussion either all together or in smaller groups for your thoughts and ideas. It’s all very informal so do come along.

The only formal part of the meeting is to fill a number of positions: On the Leadership team, to the PCC, Deanery Synod rep, Churchwarden, and Cornwell rep on the ‘Link’ management committee. These take effect after the Parish APCM (the Annual Parochial Church Meeting) which is 3pm on 10^th April at St Catherine’s.

If I haven’t already spoken to you and you are willing to fill one or more of these positions or would like to know more about what’s involved please let me know or speak to me next Sunday.

Good News!

Our ‘Build-a-Bog’ Christmas appeal which had a target of paying for 10 toilets in India at £41 each has raised enough for 20; double our original target!

I’m sending a cheque for £820 off to Christian Aid, thank you to everyone who contributed.

This Sunday 27th February Rev Denis Smith will be taking our communion service; no Sunday school but there’ll be activity sheets for the children.

On Sunday 6th March we’ve got an afternoon walk & tea. Meet 2.30pm at Tony's House, back around 4pm for tea (bring cakes to share) if you can’t make the walk you’re welcome to join us for the tea.

On Saturday 26th March our Springtime Litter pick, meet 10am at the Cornwell Centre where the Neighbourhood Wardens will have bags and tools for a 2 hour blitz of the local area. Coincidentally the Royal Oak opens at 12noon if we feel we deserve a drink afterwards.

News - Prayer Meeting, Food Collection & Messy Church

It’s the ‘First Thursday of the Month’ Cornwell Prayer meeting this week (Thursday 3rd February) and we’re meeting 7pm to 8pm at Marion's home, do come and join us for this hour as we pray for each other, our local community and as the Spirit leads us.

A reminder that during January and February we’re collecting food (non perishable) for the ‘Churches in Reading Drop in Centre’ (CIRDIC). There’s a box at church for donations with a list of the sort of things they need. They have more than enough pasta but they always need tinned meat.

Intended for all the family but appealing to the younger children is ‘Messy Church’ this Saturday 5th March with ‘Word Puppets’ 3.30-5pm at St Catherine’s.

Shoebox Appeal Service

We made a big effort to involve our local community in the Shoebox appeal this year and delivered over 1,000 leaflets and letters to local homes and businesses as well as to church members and children attending Cool Club, GLuG and Youth group.

Jenni Nash, one of our Neighbourhood wardens advertised within Sovereign Housing, and involved the local Pupil Referral Unit, Holybrook Youth Club and Beansheaf Pre-school to bring 35 filled shoeboxes.

In addition to dozens of boxes from local families, Hall Place Equestrian Centre, Tilehurst Parish Council, Cornwell 0-5’s group and Adam & Eve hairdressers contributed; even before our
Shoebox service we had 107 boxes! At the Shoebox service it was good to see new faces and the wall of Shoeboxes grew; the final total was 160. At the end of the service many young helpers
carried the boxes out to the cars to be taken to St Catherine's where they joined the Shoeboxes collected by St Catherine's ready for collection by the Samaritan's Purse van.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to a record year!

This Weekend

This Saturday 23^rd October - we’ve planned the walk at Linear Park (meet 2.30pm in the Beansheaf Car Park) but the weather forecast is for heavy rain. It might have passed over by lunchtime but if it’s still raining we’ll postpone the walk (call me if in doubt) and go for the following Saturday 30^th.

This Sunday 24^th October - Rev Lorraine Colam is coming to take our 11am communion service, don’t forget real coffee and home made cakes from 10.30am.

Cornwell Harvest Festival - Sunday 26^th September
11am with refreshments as usual from 10.30am, we’re collecting tinned food (there’s a list at church of needs but if in doubt tinned meats are always needed) for the Drop-in-Centre. Please stay on after the service for a Harvest lunch of Soup and rolls at around 12.15pm. It’s ‘Back to Church Sunday’ so a good service to come to and bring a friend.

Alpha - Places available
We’re hosting an Alpha course on Thursday evenings beginning 30th September. If you’d like to join us and better still bring a friend, or for more information email alpha@cornwellcommunitychurch.org.uk

Afternoon walk - Saturday 23^rd October
Many of us who live in Tilehurst haven’t explored south of the A4. Linear Park has ‘Green Flag’ status (the scheme recognises and rewards the best green spaces in the country) so let’s explore it!
Meet 2.30pm in the Beansheaf Community Centre Car Park (off Charrington Road, Calcot, RG31 7AW) to explore the Park, bring drinks and snacks and we’ll aim to finish around 4pm.

Our Youth Group took part in a Reading-wide initiative over Easter; the aim was to portray some of the excesses of modern life by creating an Art installation based on the cross and in doing so hoping that people passing by would stop and think.

Tomorrow 14^th February from 10.30am we’ve got pancakes instead of cakes as the pre-service refreshment

This because Tuesday is Shrove Tuesday - ‘Pancake Day’ leading to ‘Ash Wednesday’ the beginning of Lent.

Lent is a time of preparation for Easter and some people mark the season of Lent by giving something up like chocolate or alcohol.

Many people give up time; by putting extra time aside for God, by attending a Lent study group, by reading a Book or Bible study.

A resource I find useful is ‘WordLive’ from Scripture Union; register and you get an email each morning with Prayers, a Bible reading and links to discussion questions, worship songs, and meditations. There’s also the option to download it as a podcast so you can hear it while you’re walking, driving or jogging.

Carol singing tonight (6pm Ivy Bank) cancelled – roads and drives just too treacherous and sleet forecast for this evening.

The crib services at Rushall Farm tomorrow have been cancelled.

Our Christmas Day service 11am at the Cornwell Centre will take place whatever the weather.

No service 27^th Dec (but there’s a 10.30am at St Catherine’s)

Scratch Nativity and Carols

Despite the snowy conditions there was a good turn out for our service on Sunday morning.

Many children were to old (not cool) or to young (stage fright) to dress up but we did have one shepherd, two angels, two Mary’s each with a baby Jesus (a third set stayed with Mum and Dad) and one wise person bearing three gifts. They all helped us tell the Christmas story.

At 11am on Sunday it’s our ‘Scratch Nativity’ (children invited to come dressed as a Nativity character) and carols, cakes from 10.30am, mince pies and mulled wine after the service.

I’ve printed one Christmas card for each family, just sign as many of them as you wish and make a donation for the money you’ve saved, take your signed card home after the service, if you can’t be there we’ll deliver the card to you next week.

It was too inclement and slippery for carol singing tonight but we hope for better conditions next Wednesday.

Carol Singing

There’s our Carol service 4pm on Sunday 13th December in the Cornwell Centre, you can email your choice of carol to: carols@cornwellcommunitychurch.org.uk by Friday 11th December.

A ‘Scratch Nativity’ and Carols at 11am on Sunday 20th December in the Cornwell Centre when children are invited to come dressed as a Nativity character.

Wednesday 23rd December - meet 6pm at the Corner Ivybank & Prince William Drive - back to O’Sullivan’s home for refreshments

Christmas Cards

As an alternative to all sending cards to each other, last year we tried one per family and that worked well so we’re doing the same this year, this is how it’ll work:-

1. I’ll print one Christmas card addressed to each Cornwell Church family and lay them out at church on Sunday 13^th and 20^th December (also card to Parish council, Neighbourhood wardens etc)

2. You sign the ones you want and make a donation to a Christian charity

3. After the service on 20^th take your card which by then should be full of names (if you can’t come to our service on the 20^th we’ll deliver your card).

In addition to making a donation in respect of all the cards you saved buying, how about adding a charity donation to your presents list; i.e. donate what you would have spent on one present.

Last year with the addition of money from our missions budget we were able to send £750 to the ‘Send a Cow’ charity to buy a cow for Africa (not just the cow but all the training and support to go with it).

This year we’ll split the money realised between 2 charities, one home and one away; ‘Prospects’ the locally based charity for people with learning disabilities and ‘Send a Cow’ (maybe a couple of goats this year)

Shoeboxes for the Samaritan's Purse appeal

We’ve had a great response to our appeal for filled shoeboxes. Members of Cornwell 0-5’s, Cool Club, GLuG and the Youth group all contributed as well as church members. In addition some people responded to the leaflets that went out with our Autumn Newsletter to all 600 homes in the area.

In all we collected 137 filled boxes; up from 75 last year! With 147 from St Catherine’s the total for the Parish was 284; up from 215 last year.

Peter and Nicky from Samaritan’s Purse arrived on Monday to collect the Shoeboxes and thanks to helpers Bill, David, and Michael we soon had the van loaded.

Forthcoming events

Tuesday 24^th November - 8pm at St Catherine’s a meeting about ‘The Project’, plans to extend and improve the facilities at St Catherine’s to better serve the community and address issues that make it difficult for church mid-week activities. The architect will be there to present the plans and answer questions. From the Cornwell point of view, apart from any new community initiatives it will make life so much easier for Holiday club, GLuG and the Youth group.

Saturday 28^th November - Between 1.30 and 5.30pm in St Catherine’s church hall, lots of helpers needed to guillotine (bring you own if you have one), fold and bundle the parish Christmas cards. As ‘Crafty Space’ is happening at the same time there’ll be Tea and Cakes. The more helpers, the quicker it’ll get done so please come along even for part of the time. Please consider a donation towards the cost of producing the cards and help with delivering them (see Stuart for details).

Wednesday 9^th December - Spanner Films, Tilehurst Globe and the Green Apostles present The Age of Stupid, "the climate blockbuster" starring Pete Postlethwaite, at 7pm in Tilehurst Methodist Church. Admission free. Retiring donations in aid of the Methodist Church refurbishment fund (Target 21) (courtesy of Tilehurst Globe). There will be a discussion after the film at 8.45 pm hopefully chaired by Peter McManners, a local author on sustainability. Please come and support this event if you haven't already seen the film! Litter pick

Many competing events today so only a small party for our autumn litter pick. Our half-yearly efforts are paying off because the amount of litter we collect has reduced each time.

In addition to the usual drinks cans and bottles we found the remains of kitchen units, a cushion, a traffic cone, two footballs (one in very good condition) and part of a climbing frame.

Advent Sunday is 29^th November when the church count-down to Christmas begins. Many of us mark this time with Advent Calendars and Advent Candles beginning 1^st December. We’ll have Calendars and Candles for sale on the church bookstall from this Sunday 22^nd November and they’ll also be available at our three clubs for young people; Cool Club, GLuG and the Youth Group.

This Sunday 22^nd November Rev Denis Smith from St Catherine’s will be taking a communion service at Cornwell. This Sunday before Advent Sunday is known as ‘Stir up Sunday’ because the traditional ‘Collect’ or Prayer for the day begins ‘Stir up O Lord the wills of your faithful people. . ‘. This Sunday is also a traditional time to make (stir up) the Christmas pudding. We’ll see if Denis has come to stir us up!

A reminder that next Saturday 21st November it’s our community litter pick; we’ll be joined by the Neighbourhood Wardens to go through Cornwell Copse and local footpaths litter picking. From previous experience there’ll be more than simply litter but don’t let that discourage you!

Meet 10am at the Cornwell Centre and we’ll finish 12noon or earlier depending on how much rubbish we find, then for those who can stay, a drink at the Royal Oak.

Thank you to everyone who has brought along a shoebox for the ‘Samaritan’s Purse’ appeal; we’ve got 133 (up from 75 last year). They’re not being collected until Monday 23rd so there’s still time for more.

Members from Cornwell helped out at the Parish Autumn Fayre on Saturday 14th November. It was great to see so many of you there ! Over £900 was raised towards the parish building development project.
